Robert’s Story, Catering Manager

When I started Muiredge Primary I got involved in the football team - then I found I had still some time, and I spoke to the Head Teacher and suggested we start a kids kitchen cooking on a budget - showing them how to do a three course meal for a fiver. Then Lockdown happened and we had only 35 kids to feed in the school, so we came up with Muiredge Masterchef - getting kids and families cooking at home together during the lockdown. We started with the chicken curry and showed them how to do it. The feedback has been brilliant. Everyone really loves it. I love the job - the work life ratio is unbelievable. It’s gave me a love for food and people skills again, and I’m still here 6 years later and loving it.

Lynne's Story, Cleaning Supervisor

I was keen to get back into employment - my older kids were younger I was always good at cleaning. I saw the job advertised and it appealed to me. I enjoy cleaning but it was the fact that you are not working through summer holidays and that I didn’t have to sort out child area that was ideal for me. It's nice to work in a team - we all help each other - we’re all the same and muck in and get it done. You’ve always got support. You know you can go if you have any issues and they’ll help you with it. With the council you don’t just get thrown in and forgot about - they back you up and encourage you. A lot of people use to say your just a cleaner but the difference the pandemic made was that people really appreciate it seeing the hard work you put in making sure everything is spotless.

Claires Story, Janitor

I started as a ten pin bowling teacher - I've been round the world - worked in care - in supermarkets. Recently I had two sons so I just wanted to change my job options. I saw an advert for a job in the council for 20 hours and applied for it. I started janitor work and I really enjoy working with the council - its a secure job and they listen to you. I've met some lovely people. I like meeting people and solving situations and if I can help I will. With young children you can't have a job of a high flyer but the council accommodate me and there is always a chance to move up. I love it. Its a good base for me for a long term job.

Jack's Story, Apprentice

You always get someone who is complementing you. It helps because comments like thanks very much helps a lot. Seeing completed work is the best part off the job - it brightens up people's day getting something fixed for them. I really like the interaction with everyone. The boys I work with are brilliant - its good to get different perspectives on everything. I get money into a pension scheme and in the future it's going to help me. The council are always looking to help you. With the council you have that security and it's a weight off your shoulders.
