Margaret McFadden, Duncanrig Secondary, South Lanarkshire Council, Sponsored by CRB Cunninghams
Our nomination for Outstanding Contribution to FM Services is Margaret McFadden, Janitor at Duncanrig Secondary which is a busy high school with a dual-use Sports Centre in East Kilbride with over 1600 pupils. She leads a team of 29 cleaning staff meeting contract standards as part of a public-private partnership.
Margaret started her career a cleaner with South Lanarkshire Council on August 2001, she showed dedication and commitment right from day one. She went from strength to strength and quickly progressed to Cleaning Supervisor and became Janitor in 2006.
Margaret has made a huge contribution to not only the school but to FM Services as a whole. Throughout her tenure, at Duncanrig she has participated in the school groups such as:
• FM Liaison rep for Staff Consultative Group
• She has volunteered for Pupil Excursion/Trips often giving up her annual leave to assist
• Trained Mental Health First Aider
• School Charity Events such as climbing Ben Nevis, Charity work for St Andrews Hospice, running 2 x 6K races
• Devotes her own time to support the pupils in school events such as the Prom, numerous shows and pantomimes
She plays an integral role in the life of a busy high school, developing and maintaining excellent relationships with pupils and Education colleagues alike.
She is always thriving to improve the services provided whilst giving constructive feedback, this was demonstrated through her participation in our PSIF improvement group which she contributed valuable feedback and areas to improve the service as a whole.
Not only has Margaret identified improvement at service level, but this has al continued at school level, where she provides on-site training to new FM staff helping to develop their knowledge and skill base. She has mentored new Janitors for the local area and increased confidence, positively acting as a role model.
South Lanarkshire Council hosted the International Children Games where 2 High schools were converted to Athletes accommodation for 2 weeks during the summer, Margaret volunteered to ensure that the accommodation was clean, safe and a positive place for the international athletes to relax after the hard day competing. Her interaction with the diverse group of young people was immense even though language could have been a barrier her smiling face and welcoming manner always made them feel at home.
Margaret played a key role in developing the training when the service changed cleaning methodology, she was instrumental in delivering the training programme which was rolled to all cleaning staff across the service, impacting positively on our business and employees.
In 2018 South Lanarkshire FM services received Building Service Best Performer in APSE awards, Margaret represented our Janitorial and cleaning service being interviewed by the external consultants sharing her extensive knowledge in all aspects of the service provision.
On a daily basis Margaret goes the extra mile, she has outstanding commitment despite some challenging personal circumstances, she is always upbeat and positive and this is attitude has continued throughout her career. She is a real asset to our team.
